A Gift From Spirit ~ Whitetail Fawns

"In stillness I hear Spirit's voice,
not universal clutter."
Rev Kathy Graves

A Gift From Spirit
Whitetail Fawn Painting
16" x 20" ~ Double Matted and Framed
silver level ~ original watercolor ~ $399.00

I am posting this older painting here today as part of
Leslie Saeta's 30 Day Marketing Challenge.

This was painted while recovering from my injury and is very symbolic in content, design and colors. The green symbolizes growth, abundance and a fresh approach to life. The purple antlers symbolize spiritual development, power and wisdom.

To buy this painting or view more of my older Spirit Art Work, go to my Spirit Art Gallery. See a sample of my burl- wood frames here.

On March 23rd, 2007, I got bucked off my horse in the woods and took my first ever ambulance ride. I landed on my left shoulder and was hoping it was just badly dislocated, but after over three hours in the Emergency Room, I found out I had a broken humerus. There was nothing humorous about it! Fortunately it was the left arm and I was still able to draw and paint during my recovery. My accident provided a great revelation and showed me how important it was to slow down in order to grow spiritually. I have concrete evidence that Universal Guidance was largely at play that day.

That morning while out taking care of the horses, I was presented with two large matching antler sheds at the edge of the woods. They were gifted to me side by side in a most unusual and deliberate placement. They were found on the East side of my property, symbolizing new beginnings. They were facing North which represents wisdom. The number two represents patience and as in all antlered species, the deer's rack is symbolic of antennae which provide heightened perception and a connection to the divine. It was not until my healing got under way that I could see that my accident was truly a powerful gift from spirit.

Mare In Moonlight ~ SOLD

I've been very distracted from painting this past week. Last Friday afternoon, without any warning, my dear husband, Jerry, unexpectedly lost the sight of his right eye. He was just finishing up a job at the Borgata Casino Health Club in Atlantic City when his right eye went totally black / blind. He drove home, then I took him to the Hospital. His blood pressure was sky high and they thought he may have had a mini stroke. He never had high blood pressure before. After extensive testing, they still didn't know what was going on, so they took him to Will's Eye Hospital in Philadelphia for more tests. Basically, what they said was, Jerry had a stroke of the eye. We were at Wills Eye Hospital Retina Center all day on Monday for more tests. The doctors at Wills were very discouraging and said the loss of sight would most likely be permanent. I refuse to believe it though. On Friday, when it happened, the eye was totally black and each day, Jerry is starting to see more. Today he said he 'sorta sees' colors, so I believe that the doctor was wrong and he can recover his sight. Now our main cercern is getting his blood pressure under control so it doesn't blow out the other eye.

Song for a Wolf - Our Guardian Spirit

I've been here by myself, quietly studying and relearning Adobe Dreamweaver (software for building web sites). The version I have been using on my old G4 Apple computer for many years is so ancient, I decided it was time to "bite the bullet" and cough up the $$$ needed to buy new software, compatible with my new OS and machine. The first step was retrieving nearly 8,000 files from my hosting site and finding them a new local home on my iMac. Going through some of my old Spirit Art Paintings and files truly rekindled my enthusiasm for Native American spiritual beliefs. As often happens to me while on the computer, one thing led me to another.  Before long, I was searching the web for spiritual inspiration and guidance.

Among many others, I came across some great words of wisdom from Chief Dan George, "(July 24, 1899 – September 23, 1981). He was a chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, a Coast Salish band located on Burrard Inlet in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was also an author, poet, and an Academy Award-nominated actor." I found this story here.

Song For A Wolf ~ Chief Dan George

"I wanted to give something of my past to my grandson. So I took him into the woods, to a quiet spot. Seated at my feet he listened as I told him of the powers that were given to each creature. He moved not a muscle as I explained how the woods had always provided us with food, homes, comfort, and religion.
He was awed when I related to him how the wolf became our guardian, and when I told him that I would sing the sacred wolf song over him, he was overjoyed.

In my song, I appealed to the wolf to come and preside over us while I would perform the wolf ceremony so that the bondage between my grandson and the wolf would be lifelong.
I sang.
In my voice was the hope that clings to every heartbeat.
I sang.
In my words were the powers I inherited from my forefathers.
I sang.
In my cupped hands lay a spruce seed-- the link to creation.
I sang.
In my eyes sparkled love. I sang.
And the song floated on the sun's rays from tree to tree.
When I had ended, it was if the whole world listened with us to hear the wolf's reply. We waited a long time but none came. Again I sang, humbly but as invitingly as I could, until my throat ached and my voice gave out.

All of a sudden I realized why no wolves had heard my sacred song. There were none left! My heart filled with tears. I could no longer give my grandson faith in the past, our past.
At last I could whisper to him: "It is finished!" "Can I go home now?" He asked, checking his watch to see if he would still be in time to catch his favorite program on TV. I watched him disappear and wept in silence. All is finished!"

 ~ Chief Dan George
Chief of the Salish Band in Burrard Inlet, B.C.

"Wolf is the embodiment of protection and wisdom and according to some native legends, the tribe's greatest teacher. Being the most intelligent and expressive of all the canines, it lives in a close-knit family group where every member knows their place. Because of this, wolf is often seen as kin to man in that our priorities of family and cooperation are similar. When a wolf howls, its ancient melodies can connect us to a primal power and spiritual energy, also known as original memory. Helping others to understand life better and to find their calling, wolf will bring you the strength to become the teacher as well as the student. As you establish a connection with your own inner leadership, wolf medicine can help cultivate healthy bonds with friends and family." ~ Sandy Sandy Spiritartist ~ Animal Spirits book

"If you talk to the animals they will talk with you and you will know each other. If you do not talk to them you will not know them, and what you do not know you will fear. What one fears one destroys." ~ Chief Dan George

My Art Used For Another Book Cover (and Back)

Last March, I was first contacted by Michelle Waggoner, the  production chief / art director for the New Plains Review, a literary journal that that is published twice a year by the Department of English at the University of Central Oklahoma. They used one of my spirit art images for the cover of their Spring '11 Publication.  On Thursday, I heard from Michelle again. She wrote; "I’d like to thank you for contributing such nice artwork to iStock. Also, we’ve used another one of your pieces as the cover art for our latest issue and would like to send you two copies."

When first viewing the online version of the front cover on Thursday, I thought; now why did they use the image that way? Then today, I remembered Michelle saying something about the back cover. I clicked on the book preview and found the back cover.  Zing, some pretty powerful poetry accompanies my little golden hummingbird there!

Follow this link to see the Fall '11 New Plains Review,
then click on PREVIEW directly under the front cover
 then at top right  -  --  - click through the pages >,  or write in - -  pg. 12  - -
It's a bit of a trek, but if you like inspiring words, it's well worth the journey.

I really miss my hummingbird honeys,

What a pleasant surprise visit on this cold and dreary wintery day.

Cover Art For The New Plains Review

A couple of copies of  the Spring '11, "New Plains Review" arrived in my mailbox today. The New Plains Review is a literary journal published each semester by the English Department of The University of Central Oklahoma. My artwork was chosen and downloaded through iStock for the current issue. I am truly honored to have my Spirit Art represent this prestigious collection of poems and short stories. Many many thanks to the New Plains Review Staff for contacting me, sending copies and a hand written thank-you note, giving me credit and allowing me to submit a profile photo and biography. With over two years as a stock contributor and more than 1,200 image downloads, this is only the second stock client who has contacted me and provided me with an in-use sample. Because it is so rare, it really means a lot to me. See here how the image was used. Although there is some color difference in my snap shot here, the colors and quality of the image came through perfectly on the cover. The original watercolor of "Woman With Hawk Spirit" is available for sale. Contact me for more information.

Relationships At The Smithville Mansion

This Saturday, I've been invited by friend and photography mentor, Nancy Louie to attend a photo shoot in Maryland. It is being put together by a group of iStockers from the Northeast region and it is called a "meetup". I'll fill you in on more details as I get them. All I know so far, is the theme is "Relationships". Working with the Venitskys, Sid and Shirley, yesterday at the Smithville Mansion already got me thinking a lot about the very subject. You can find out more about them and see more quotes on relationships in today's Spirit Art post.
