Strength Supersedes Struggle

"We grow because we struggle,
we learn and overcome."
~ Robert G. Allen

I am an avid collector of inspirational stories and quotes. Some of these treasures date back as far as high school. The really special ones have been read many times and I think of them often. A few of these pieces have even inspired my art and writing. It has been a while since I reread and posted this one, so I thought it might be a good story to go along with this piece. Many of these scenarios, like the one posted below, are "Author Unknown".

BUTTERFLIES ALWAYS REMIND ME
OF THIS BEAUTIFUL STORY:

STRUGGLES
An Inspiring Story About How Struggles Strengthen Us

When he was a small boy, he had loved butterflies. Oh, not to net and mount them, but to wonder at them and their habits.
Now a grown man with his first son to be born in a few weeks, he found himself once again fascinated with a cocoon. He had found it at the side of the park path. Somehow the twig had been knocked from the tree and the cocoon had survived undamaged and still woven to the branch.

As he had seen his mother do, he gently protected it by wrapping it in his handkerchief and carried it home. The cocoon found a temporary home in a wide-top mason jar with holes in the lid. The jar was placed on the mantle for easy viewing and protection from their curious cat who would delight in volleying the sticky silk between her paws.

The man watched. His wife's interest lasted only a moment, but he studied the silky envelope. Almost imperceptibly at first, the cocoon moved. He watched more closely and soon the cocoon was trembling with activity. Nothing else happened. The cocoon remained tightly glued to the twig and there was no sign of wings.

Finally the shaking became so intense that the man thought the butterfly would die from the struggle. He removed the lid on the jar, took a sharp pen knife from his desk drawer, and carefully made a tiny slit in the side of the cocoon. Almost immediately, one wing appeared and then outstretched the other. The butterfly was free!

It seemed to enjoy its freedom and walked along the edge of the mason jar and along the edge of the mantle. But it didn't fly. At first the man thought the wings needed time to dry, but time passed and still the butterfly did not take off.

The man was worried and called up his neighbor who taught science. He told the neighbor how he had found the cocoon, placed it in the mason jar, and the terrible trembling as the butterfly struggled to get out. When he described how he had carefully made a small slit in the cocoon, the teacher stopped him. "Oh, that is the reason. You see, the struggle is what gives the butterfly the strength to fly."

And so it is with us. Sometimes it's the struggles in life that strengthen us the most. ~ Author Unknown

The Creation of the Butterflies ~ Local Lenni Lenape Legend ~ # 30 of 30

"Myth opens the world to the dimension of mystery,
to the realization of the mystery that underlies all forms."
~ Joseph Campbell

I was delighted to discover another legend from a local Native American tribe, the Lenni Lenape. "How Butterfy Came to Betells of how Creator made butterflies from a sack filled with all the colors of nature. As an afterthought, he took the songs from the winged ones and added them to the mix. Upon opening his sack, thousands of beautiful singing butterflies filled the air. The people rejoiced but the songbirds were not happy. Creator agreed that it wasn't fair to take away the one thing that set the birds apart from the rest of creation. So that is why the butterflies carry their beauty in silence today.

I really struggled with the challenge this time. I am sure some of you other participants can relate! Yikes, I got behind a couple of times and had to do two "keepers" in one day. I really WAS painting everyday, sometimes more than one - sometimes repainting a piece two or three times before I was happy with "showing it in puiblic". That's the luxury of not being in a challenge☻ I made sure I never got more than one day behind though, because if I did, that would mean doing three paintings in one day just to catch up! Daily posting has been very time consuming for me too. I was relieved to have finished this last painting yesterday on time! After two attempts of getting a decent photo of it though, I decided to wait, reshoot and post it today. I gave a private Yupo lesson this morning, so time was spent organizing piles of books, files and supplies and "de-challenging" my mind and studio.

There were times this past month, when I wasn't so sure I could do it this time. I'm very competitive with myself and quitting or not meeting my goal would have been more painful than pushing aside everything else in my life to finish. I feel like a kid who has had awful growing pains and has just gone through a major growth spurt. Yes, growth can be uncomfortable, even painful at times. Now that it's over, I can whole heartedly say," I am really glad I took and met Leslie's Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge for the second time this year"! Woo Hoo! Time for a celebration!

Honestly, I'll say it again; I don't think I could have done it
without all you guys cheering me on.Thanks so sooo much!

Butterfly Bliss and Hummingbird Magic

onto synthetic, nonabsorbent Yupo paper with a black pencil
then painted in transparent watercolor.

The Butterfly Bushes have been attracting some interesting species lately and I estimate that we have around 100 hummingbirds here now. We go through a gallon and a half of nectar everyday. A lot of time is spent caring for the hummingbirds, watering their flowers, making nectar, filling and cleaning feeders. There are also plenty of sweet, soothing, quiet times though. It's a relaxing meditation; watching them and listening, just enjoying their presence and entertaining aerial displays. The male hummingbirds will be leaving us soon and the females and youngsters are starting to pair up and go into training for their biannual migration. They are such magical creatures; it is no wonder that they symbolize happiness, love and joy! Do you have butterflies and hummingbirds where you live? What types do you see?
