I've been neglecting my blog lately and I apologize to anyone who looks forward to their regularity. After a hectic October, going with the flow here at The Sandarosa has me enjoying a more relaxed appreciation for life and nature's seasonal glory. Late autumn is a perfect time to reorganize, recharge and reflect. 

I gave my first Alcohol Ink Workshop at the Center for the Arts of Southern NJ on Saturday and it was a huge success! I have been asked to hold another one there and have plans to offer a workshop again in February.

I'm excited to announce that I am publishing my first ever, wall calendar for 2015 ~ FOR THE LOVE OF TREES! It is 8 x 11", printed on glossy card stock and features 20 tree paintings with the quotes that inspired them. They are already on their way and as soon as I receive them, they will go on sale online and at my studio for the introductory price of only $19.99 each!

First Step - Paint the eyes.

Second and Third Steps -

Because I wanted the moose dark on a lighter

background, this was initiated with medium to dark mid-tones.

Fourth - The background wash was added.

With the background in, I could see that the value of the

far antler was too light. The painting was finished by

darkening that part of the antler, lifting a little pigment

here and there and adding a few darks and darker mid-tones

and adding more value and details to the background.

It's a a little past noon here and this is the earliest

I've posted during the 30/30 yet.  This painting went

really smoothly. I guess Moose Spirit was by my side.

Tommy The Moose

Yesterday I got a book in the mail from the Smithville Mansion. It has a picture of February the Moose in it! I will scan the picture and post it here for the world to see within the next day or two. I found this picture of John Connell riding a moose on Google Images. According to a blog I found, Ruth wrote that Connell knew how to trap wild moose without harming them and was responsible for bringing moose to Newfoundland where they were not native. She said the animal in the picture was named Tommy. See my older posts for other vintage tame moose pictures!

Moose In Harness

This weekend, I forwarded a photo of a guy supposedly from Alaska who had a tame moose that he used in harness for lumbering and hauling tasks. Well, it seems that picture had been Photoshoped, however I do know that moose have been used in harness before. We have a museum near us with pictures of a prominent business owner who had a tame bull moose that he used to pull a buggy. I looked on Google Images and found these two pictures that certainly appear to be real.
