I first heard about this myth a couple of years ago when my husband came home from a fishing trip and reported that the banana I packed him in his lunch had been thrown overboard."We weren't catching any fish and when people saw I had a banana, they all went "bananas", he said. While doing this 30 in 30 project, I came across more information about this superstition. It is a belief among sports fisherman and those catering to the trade, that having bananas aboard a boat is bad luck. It is believed that bananas can produce ill fates such as bad weather, mechanical break down, low or no catch, illness among crew and other misfortunes. When things go bad on a charter, often the clients are interrogated by the crew and any bananas or foods containing them are thrown overboard. Almost immediately, their luck seems to turn around and a good day is enjoyed by all. Although there is no sure explanation of how this legend came to be, you can see some possibilities here.
