The Many Benefits of Creating A Series

"A series is a collection of paintings that when viewed
leaves no doubt the same artist created them all.
The theme running through the work is stated and restated
in different yet interconnected ways and the viewer can
look at the collection and understand more easily
what the artist is trying to convey."
~ Lynette Ubel / Ubel Arts, LLC Blog

In Lynette Ubel's excellent blog post, she states, "After the commitment to begin a series is made, it begins to take on a life of its own. With each additional painting in a series, the original thought grows into something more refined and bigger than a singular painting could ever be. Every addition allows the artist’s voice to get louder and clearer, demonstrating that they are on a path,
know what they’re doing, where they’re going, and what they have to do to get there."

I have noticed something happening every time I do a series. It refines my skills as well as my vision. This week's advice to an online student was; "You will really benefit from playing with the pigment without trying to create a masterpiece. (Case in point, below) Because I am rusty at this technique, I did 16 backgrounds - all one right after the other, to re-establish and refine my skills and get comfortable with the results. I didn't get it the first one or two or half dozen, but by the 12th or so try, I felt like I was starting to get the hang of it again. The bottom line is, get help from someone with real experience and don't give up. You need to set up a factory.

Over the past four Saturdays, I've been giving private lessons to a student
who's been creating a series. She is flourishing and astounded by her progress
and inventory by "building a factory" and doing them assembly-line fashion.

I'm convinced that working on the pieces together and repeating one step at a time,
over and over again can really reinforce and expedite learning and spark individuality.

Actually, I think I'm always working on a series of series these days, lol.
I can't really even remember the last time I worked on a one-on.

"Not many of us can be convinced that working in a factory is a lot of laughs.
Being a factory may be even worse. But there's something to be said
for building one and getting into it."

Happy Creating!

My Solo Show Is Now Up At The MAC

I am so happy!
Everyone keeps telling me that the show,
 "An Evolution of Passion"
looks really fabulous!

The exhibit opened yesterday and the time went by really quickly.
New friends and old stopped by to help, visit, get a speak peek,
bring flowers, buy some art and in general, wish us luck.

When I envisioned the show, I knew it would be the biggest collection
of Sandy Sandy Art ever displayed in one location.
(Several have already "left the building", lol.)

Thinking conservatively, cautiously I told people that
"there would be over 100 original paintings on display".

Little did I realize, until after two days of set up, that there are
well over 400 original pieces of my art on display and for sale.
WOW! That was a shocker!

Find out more about the show:

Back From A Whirlwind of Activities

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear.
Action breeds confidence and courage.
If you want to conquer fear,
do not sit home and think about it.
Go out and get busy.”
~ Dale Carnegie

Guess what!? I'm baaack!

So much has happened in the past two weeks since my last post here!

Our Client Appreciation Event was a huge success last weekend.
On the first day, two dozen original paintings found new homes!

Here are some highlights from Saturday.

New collectors, Steve and Cocoa from
Green Thumb Garden Center in Hammonton, NJ
acquired three new pieces.

Green Thumb is where we get most of our flowers.
We love their plants, service and prices.

I loved this set-up.

We had over 300 paintings
on display in the studio and outside.

Happy collector, Dorrie shows her newest additions.

Kathy D. showed up with cookies for humans
and stud muffins for the ponies.

Coming soon in my next posts . . .
a surprise visit from an old classmate and
a five day whirlwind visit from my Florida sister, Gaile.
Happy Fall And Thanks For Stopping By!

You can only have more for yourself

The Fall Giveaway's Pot Has Been Sweetened!

In my last post, the kittens and I announced our Fall Giveaway. Although the response to it has been OK, I really want to make it even better. I've sweetened the pot - (to bribe someone in order to receive a favor). I'm now offering the winner of this giveaway their choice of one of these featured original watercolors in addition to the bat prints!

Original Watercolor - Fall Pumpkins - matted 5" x 7"
You can read the rules for entering here.

Original Watercolor - Pentagram - matted 5" x 7"

My dear friend, Robin Larkspur, has announced this giveaway on both of her blogs, Wiccan Writes and PurrrrSnicKitty. I wanted to reward people who do such nice things (and bribe others) by giving them an extra two entries every time they mention it with links on their blog. So, as of right now, Robin is in the lead with 3 entries for being a follower and commenting on the first giveaway post and she has four more entries for featuring this giveaway on her blogs! (I did this watercolor today with you in mind my friend. Thank you very much!)

Each time someone links to this giveaway on their blog, they get two more entries! And each time they comment on one of my posts from now until September 30th, they get another entry. I've made a list and I'm keeping track, so be sure to send me a link if you post on your blog.

Original Watercolor - Crow and Friend #1 - matted 5" x 7"

This crow and pumpkin painting came about today because I have a crow and pumpkin theme starting to take shape this year in my kitchen.

I thought three crows would be cool too, so I did another version. (See Kathryn, you're not the only one who likes to do things over!)

Original Watercolor - Crow and Friends #2 - matted 5" x 7"

I hope to hear from you all. Please let me know which watercolor you would like to own if you win and I'll write it down by your name!

Best Wishes and Good Luck,

"There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky,
which through the summer is not heard or seen,
as if it could not be, as if it had not been!"
~ Percy Bysshe Shelley

More Hydrangea Paintings in Watercolor

Here is my second set of hydrangea paintings from my personal challenge on www.SketchingEveryday.com.

Hydrangea Painting #3

5.5 x 7.5" - transparent watercolor on Arches 140lb. C.P., matted to 8 x 10"
Painting #3 was done wet-in wet with minimal pencil guidelines. Here I totally wet both sides of the paper with clean water and used mostly a dry brush with plenty of pigment.

Hydrangea Painting #4 - Step-1

For painting #4, I wet the back of the paper throughly, then wet the background, carefully going around the flower and stem area. Wetting the back allows a longer workable half-wet period and allows the painting to dry flat without taping or stapling it to a board. You can see the nice edges of my painting in these two photos. I crease and tear my sheets to achieve this effect. This gives one the option of various mountings and mattings.

Hydrangea Painting #4 - Step-2

After step one was completely dry, I wet the back of the paper first then wet the leaves with clean water, carefully going up to the edges.

Hydrangea Painting #4

5.5 x 7.5" - transparent watercolor on Arches 140lb. C.P., matted to 8 x 10"

After step-2, and the paper was throughly dry, I dunked the whole sheet in water and let it get real wet. I took it out and placed it on cardboard so it would dry flat as I worked.

I'm thinking I want to go back on #4 and do some calligraphy and detailing like in the painting below. What do you think?

The Spirit of Summer
11 x 15" - transparent watercolor on Arches 140lb. C.P., matted to 16 x 20"

The comments on these challenge paintings have been most appreciated.
Thanks to those of you who took the time to comment or email. You are awesome!

As always, I'd love to hear your feedback.
Which one(s) do you like or dislike and why?

Thanks again for reading and have an inspired week!
