The Oaks Ignored Their Pleas

"There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

 ~ Neil Peart

I based today's painting on one I did for the first 30 in 30 in 2013.
This is one of the many stages this piece went through.
I wanted to revisit the theme of this favorite, very visual quote.
And after squinting at this for a while, I realized that the light sky value at
the bottom right was distracting, taking emphasis away from my focal point.
I decided to try to make it better, so I changed one thing, and then another ...
Please check it out and let me know if you think I achieved my goal.

See today's painting, Day 12, now
and the finished painting for "Unrest In The Forest" - Day 13
tomorrow here on my website blog.

Wow, we are quickly coming up to the half way point of the challenge.
It's all down hill from there my friends!
Thanks for stopping by. Wishing You Much Happiness,

Poplar ~ Tree of the Autumnal Equinox ~ # 22 of 30 ~SOLD

“Autumn is a second spring
when every leaf is a flower.”
~ Albert Camus

Today marks the autumn equinox this year. Equinox means "equal night" and on March 21st and Sept. 22nd, 2013, the day and night are of equal length. The autumnal equinox traditionally has been a time of harvest and thanksgiving. Spiritually, it is a celebration of "going within", preparing for the darkness and a kind of symbolic death and resurrection. Now daylight will continue to decline until December 21st, marking the winter solstice, when the days once again slowly begin to get longer. Throughout the history of mankind, many legends, rituals and beliefs are centered around the changing of the seasons. There are as many varied beliefs as there are cultures. One of the most interesting I found was the Celtic Connection of the Autumnal Equinox to the Poplar Tree. Do you know of any you'd like to share?

“But then fall comes,
kicking summer out on its treacherous ass
as it always does one day sometime after the midpoint of September,
it stays awhile like an old friend that you have missed.
It settles in the way an old friend will settle into your favorite chair
and take out his pipe and light it and then fill the afternoon with
stories of places he has been and things he has done
since last he saw you.”
~ Stephen King

Many thanks to Katherine Thomas for suggesting the subject of today's legend.

Happy fall y'all!

Kittens Win The Witchy Cat Contest!

Last week I entered a couple of photos of Pye Pye and Opie in a Witchy Cats Halloween Photo Contest hosted by Kim of Witch Cats and The Wiccan Life Blogs.

Today in the mail, we received our prizes! I love this wreath with a ribbon pentagram and cute witches and cats that Kim made. Such an original idea and so well executed! I found the purr-fect place to display it and this great seasonal decoration has already been hung on the wall.

Kim also sent the kittens a handmade catnip toy mouse.
I woke up Opie from his nap and he was too sleepy to play much.

But Cutie Pye really got into it.

She gave it (and herself) a real good workout.

And with an exhausted grin, she says;

THANK YOU VERY MUCH Auntie Kim!!

We love our fun loving, like minded blogging friends!
