Keeping A Diary (Day 5)

"Painting is just another way
of keeping a diary."
~ Pablo Picasso

Alcohol Inks and Watercolor on Yupo paper
See painting specifications and price here.

I love how this little crow painting came alive with the addition of the alcohol ink background! It's one of my favorites in this 30 in 30 "Colorful Cosmic Combos" series, so far.  I think the alcohol inks are "doing their thing" and are giving more depth and dimention to the work. Yeah alcohol inks, watercolor and Yupo!

Fall seems to bring the crows to the forefront here at The Sandarosa. They all but disappear after fledging their young in the late spring. Then, as soon as my hummers start leaving, the crows start to come back. I love hearing their calls when I'm outside. They have such an unusual language and spell-binding repertoire. I always feel that whenever crow appears, it's a message from Spirit and that there is some good protection and magic about.

Tip of the day:
I use a Tube-Wringer to get the most out of my paint tubes. I got it at one of the major art supply stores online and have had it for years. The company claims, "You'll get up to one-third more for your money from every tube with the Tube-Wringer®.I don't know about 1/3, but I'm sure it has paid for itself several times over. The U.S. made wringer keeps tubes much neater and prevents them from splitting too.

Rainbow Crow ~ •Sold

"Stories live in your blood and bones,
follow the seasons and light candles
on the darkest night."
~ Patti Davis

Crows play a central role in many Native American creation stories.
I was delighted to discover this one about "Rainbow Crow"
from a local Native American tribe, The Lenni Lenape.
Follow the link to see how the crow lost his
rainbow colors and beautiful voice.
The story ends well though. He saved
all the creatures of the earth
and himself in the end!

"It is the function of art to renew our perception.
What we are familiar with, we cease to see.
The artist shakes up the familiar scene,
and, as if by magic, we can see a new meaning in it."

Black is the color of West and the great unknown. It is the home of the future and of ancestor spirits. Crows and ravens are messengers from this realm. They offer us guidance and protection. When they come into your life, expect and accept change. Stay positive and good things will undoubtedly happen.

Here's a snapshot of my work in progress and my set-up for painting these crows.
I'll be posting the other two paintings in this series later this week.

Stay cool and dry and have a good day!
Hugs,

The Fall Giveaway's Pot Has Been Sweetened!

In my last post, the kittens and I announced our Fall Giveaway. Although the response to it has been OK, I really want to make it even better. I've sweetened the pot - (to bribe someone in order to receive a favor). I'm now offering the winner of this giveaway their choice of one of these featured original watercolors in addition to the bat prints!

Original Watercolor - Fall Pumpkins - matted 5" x 7"
You can read the rules for entering here.

Original Watercolor - Pentagram - matted 5" x 7"

My dear friend, Robin Larkspur, has announced this giveaway on both of her blogs, Wiccan Writes and PurrrrSnicKitty. I wanted to reward people who do such nice things (and bribe others) by giving them an extra two entries every time they mention it with links on their blog. So, as of right now, Robin is in the lead with 3 entries for being a follower and commenting on the first giveaway post and she has four more entries for featuring this giveaway on her blogs! (I did this watercolor today with you in mind my friend. Thank you very much!)

Each time someone links to this giveaway on their blog, they get two more entries! And each time they comment on one of my posts from now until September 30th, they get another entry. I've made a list and I'm keeping track, so be sure to send me a link if you post on your blog.

Original Watercolor - Crow and Friend #1 - matted 5" x 7"

This crow and pumpkin painting came about today because I have a crow and pumpkin theme starting to take shape this year in my kitchen.

I thought three crows would be cool too, so I did another version. (See Kathryn, you're not the only one who likes to do things over!)

Original Watercolor - Crow and Friends #2 - matted 5" x 7"

I hope to hear from you all. Please let me know which watercolor you would like to own if you win and I'll write it down by your name!

Best Wishes and Good Luck,

"There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky,
which through the summer is not heard or seen,
as if it could not be, as if it had not been!"

Magical Crow ~ SOLD

I am feeling a little better today, although I'm still moving pretty darn slow. Jerry has been a doll and is taking care of the ranch while I recuperate from Sunday's mishap.  Since my chores are now minimal, I spent most of the day painting. I am 2/3 of the way through my color studies for Father O. and I am fairly satisfied with how they are turning out. That's a good thing. Perhaps I am starting to see some light at the end of my long commission tunnel.

I've been wanting to do a crow portrait as a part of my "Signs of Spring" series, so I also did this painting today. Our crows disappear over the winter. I don't know where they go. Crows don't migrate, but they sure don't stay around here. As soon as Spring rolls around, they all come back. We've got a dozen or so now and they really love to make a ruckus. I know some people don't like them because they eat other birds' eggs and offspring, but I like having them around, talking to me whenever I go outside.
