This is the exact same painting as the one I posted yesterday, only it's done on Arches cold press, watercolor paper instead of Yupo paper. Hard to believe, isn't it? They are so totally different.

The little fox in the reference photo I painted this from is all fluff.  And boy, she needs it in Crested Butte Colorado! It can get down into the minuses for days at a time. Sally Vennel's photos of her awesome, winter, high country foxes have got me all charged up. Their luxurious winter coat is pale, almost a buff, compared to summer. Maybe that's so they blend into the snowy landscape better. I met a few of Sally's foxes when I was out there visiting one winter. What a beautiful and awe inspiring animal they are!

Which do you like better, yesterday's Foxy One on Yupo paper or today's Fluff and Stardust on traditional watercolor paper? I find that some people definitely prefer my work on one paper over the other and some like them both equally. I'd love to hear some opinions. Thanks so much for reading my blog.

As always

  1. It's very difficult to choose which one I like best, since both are beautiful in their own right. I may prefer this one a bit more because I think that gorgeous blue background really sets of this adorable fox! I really enjoyed seeing the difference between the two papers.

  2. Whew! Hard choice. I don't think I CAN choose. They both have qualities I like. Nope, can't choose. Love 'em both.

  3. They're both beautiful! I think it depends on where you're going to use them. If it's for a wall painting in a frame, I like the latest one. It's softer and seems more realistic to me, because I can see more texture in the fur. But the one on the yupo would look really cool on a glossy greeting card because of the smoothness, and it seems more contemporary. That's a good idea to produce the same image on different papers!

  4. Thanks so much for the feedback Claire, Robin and Katherine. When I posted this image on facebook, there was hardly any interest in this one compared to the Yupo one. Well, I like the idea of producing the same image on different papers, so I may try Arches smooth hot press paper and Yupo next time.
I agree with you Katherine, that the Yupo tends to look more contemporary. Thanks again ladies!
